Disaster Response Case
South Asia earthquake
In 2005, the remote mountain regions of Pakistan were hit by a devastating earthquake that laid most of the infrastructure to waste. All of a sudden, housands of villagers found themselves cut off from food, shelter, and medical supplies.
Supported by Pakistani army personnel, a 30-head DHL DRT team set up at the Chaklala air base to handle and coordinate a staggering 9,000 tons of relief supplies, flown in by 230 charter aircraft over a three-week period.
The team’s most ingenious innovation: the DHL “Speedball”, a novel solution to an all-too-common relief problem – when delivering aid to remote and inaccessible locations, cardboard boxes tend to break on impact.

Filled with food and supplies to last a family of seven for ten days, the sturdy Speedball, made from recycled DHL shipping bags, is easy to handle and survives a helicopter drop from 35 meters.
