Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar
In 2008, a devastating cyclone tore through the Irrawaddy Delta of Myanmar, leaving as many as 134,000 people dead or missing.
As part of its humanitarian partnership with the UN, DHL’s DRT team was asked to manage a vital warehouse for non-food relief items.
With up to five aircraft flying in every day, loaded with kitchen sets, drinking-water treatment plants, generators, blankets, plastic sheeting, tents, and mosquito nets, the team provided effective logistics support at the warehouse for relief goods.
Over the course of a strenuous three weeks, 12 DHL volunteers from Malaysia, Bangladesh, and Singapore ensured that all essentials were offloaded onto pallets, neatly stacked and counted for further transport to the Delta.

Working 12–14-hour shifts in sweltering heat, the team found itself battling with inadequate roads, severe transport and communication problems, a shortage of trucks, boats, and forklifts, as well as restrictions by the country’s military regime.
But all the hard work paid off in the end: overall, the combined relief efforts helped thousands of the cyclone’s survivors – quickly and efficiently.
