Solutions at Expo 2010
DHL Efficient Solutions
More than 100 best-practice examples, 10 of which have been contributed by DHL, present the manifold possibilities for achieving sustainable and environmentally compatible life on earth, i.e. by means of renewable energies, new mobility concepts, or ecoeffective urban infrastructures. The examples show how technological development, political initiatives, civic activities and individual behavior can contribute to an ecological transformation of our civilization towards a better, greener future.
Here, DHL presents details of our Group's environmental protection objective to enhance carbon efficiency, including subcontractor's operations, by 30 percent by 2020 compared to 2007 and an interim target of 10 percent for our own operations by 2012.

The heart and soul of our DHL presence at EXPO are the tried and tested carbon-neutral and carbon minimization concepts, products and services. Our consolidation center is a case in point. By having all goods destined for a city arrive at one single place outside the city, the consolidation center reduces inner city traffic and emissions.
One example of how modern technologies support climate protection is the intelligent DHL Smart Truck. The first of its kind, it calculates the most efficient delivery route and cleverly manages traffic jams, detours and instant orders to reduce city traffic and prevent emissions. In addition, the system informs consignees of the imminent arrival of their shipment.

Since its introduction in Germany in 2002, the innovative DHL Packstation has enjoyed tremendous success. The 24/7 parcel pick-up and delivery machine prevents failed delivery, reduces city traffic and saves emissions. An added value of the DHL Packstation: customers can dispatch and pick up their parcels whenever they want. No need to observe post office opening hours.

Modal Shift is a good example of how a combination of several transportation modes can improve overall sustainability. Air transportation, for instance, can cause up to 20 times more emissions than delivery by ship. With this in mind, we develop optimized transportation networks and solutions that integrate emission-minimizing modes: ships, trains, and alternative-engine vehicles.

In order to advance climate protection, everything requires constant testing and improvement. Take trucks, for example: an optimized outer shape helps minimize aerodynamic drag – and thus fuel consumption.
In collaboration with vehicle manufacturer DON-BUR, we have developed new aerodynamic trucks, the so-called teardrop trailers, which save up to 10 percent fuel compared to traditional trucks. More than 360 trucks are already on the road.

The city of the future requires visionary ideas. Why not have parcels delivered by people who are already moving across cities, e.g. on their work to or from work?
This is the question at the heart of the Bring Buddy research project in which we, in collaboration with universities, develop alternative concepts to reduce inner city traffic. In this context, mobile phones would work as information and documentation tools and social networks would become genuine networks.

At DHL, we make parcels “green”, or carbon-neutral, through our investment in climate protection projects. They serve to neutralize the transport-related emissions and give our customers, both corporate and private, the opportunity to send their shipments in an environmentally friendly way. An example of a climate protection project is the Liuao wind park in China’s Fujian province. By offsetting 7,557 tons of CO2 in 2008 alone, we have made the construction and operation of this wind park possible.

Constructing buildings in an eco-friendly way can make a big difference when you operate as many buildings as we do. For our European hub at Leipzig airport, for instance, we use an extremely powerful block heat and power plant, have installed solar panels and collect rainwater to clean our aircraft.

Company size does matter – not only with regard to eco-friendly buildings, but concerning the environmentally conscious behavior at the workplace, too. Because our 300,000 employees can make a huge difference, we encourage them, i.e. to switch off lights, printers and computers when they leave the office. In a pilot project, some 30 employees use our “Simply Green” software to calculate their carbon footprint in comparison with their baseline; whenever they save carbon emissions they are awarded climate protection points.
