Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra
The Gewandhaus Orchestra can look back with pride on its more than 250-year history. Sixteen Leipzig merchants founded and financed a concert society which has since made musical history and become one of the world's most renowned orchestras.
Felix Mendelssohn, Arthur Nikisch, Wilhelm Furtwängler, Franz Konwitschny and Kurt Masur number among the most distinguished Gewandhaus Music Directors.
The Sunday Times named the Gewandhaus Orchestra New Year´s Day concert 2009 in London one of fifteen “Best classical events of the decade”. In 2009 the Gewandhaus Orchestra was named German “Brand of the Century”.
