The ball that traveled the world with DHL

Roughly a year ago, DHL, Official Logistics Partner of Rugby World Cup 2011, sent the official match ball on a trip around the world to visit several of the countries participating in the championship. The ball happily gathered signatures of current and former players along the way.

New Zealand rugby legend and World Cup 1987 winning squad member Grant Fox literally kicked the trip off in September 2010 when he punted the ball off Auckland’s iconic Sky Tower after being the first to sign the ball.

The ball made stops in Australia, Fiji, Italy, France, England, Ireland, Wales, Scotland and Chile before making its way back to its home on the Kiwi’s North Island just in time for the start of Rugby World Cup 2011 today in Auckland.

A number of past legends and present greats signed the ball, including former Australian rugby champion Matthew Burke, Ian Campbell, one of Chile’s best players ever, Fijian rugby hero Sale Sorovaki, and Irish team captain Brian O’Driscoll, to name only a few.

The ball will be displayed for the duration of the tournament in the DHL section of the Fan Zone along the waterfront in Auckland. If you’re lucky enough to be in New Zealand at this exciting time, check it out!
