Tokyo Tones Down its Fashion Week

Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Tokyo opened October 16 with little of the pomp-and-circumstance that’s become synonymous with Fashion Weeks around the world.

In a city whose lights have been dimmer in recent months, it seemed fitting that the fashions on the runway were a bit more subdued than usual. Always avant-garde, designers showing in Tokyo this go-round have been opting for more neutral colors to tamper the still-in-demand geometric prints and patterns.

Gone are the colorful gyaru gals and their mini-minis and bleached hair, replaced instead by more high-end designs, including those by British luxury brand Paul Smith and local brands such as Jun Ashida and G.V.G.V.. New this year is the Versus Tokyo event, a showing of eight top Tokyo brands on October 22, when Fashion Week closes.

The only heavy-hitting Fashion Week to be held in Asia, Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Tokyo receives logistical support from DHL, whose fashion and apparel network provides coverage from raw materials to cutting rooms to shop floors around the world.
