Puma Takes Home 2nd Shore Crew Award

Any sailor will tell you that teamwork is vital out on the high seas. But in an intense competition like the Volvo Ocean Race, working together on land is equally as important.

That’s why DHL created the DHL Shore Crew Award, to recognize the efforts of the behind-the-scenes teams, including boat builders and sail makers, to get the equipment ready and yachts in gear before they hit the water.

Despite tough competition from the other teams, PUMA Ocean Racing powered by BERG grabbed the DHL Shore Crew Award for the second consecutive time after pulling into the harbor at Sanya, China. On this, the third leg, the teams were faced once again with the unusual situation of having to pull the boats out of water after sailing out of Abu Dhabi. Loaded onto secure cargo ships in order to workaround the Horn of Africa’s no-go zone, the yachts needed to be off-loaded and redressed in fast time once they’d arrived in the Maldives.

The cooperative efforts show by Team Puma during that offloading were the deciding factor for the DHL Shore Crew Award judges, and after the team arrived in Sanya, the Hawaii of China, Mr. Wu Dongming, Managing Director of DHL-Sinotrans, handed over the trophy.

“The sailing prowess and human endeavor built on the spirit of great seafarers, such as Team Puma, who sailed around the world, perfectly fits into DHL’s brand image as a true global player with worldwide local strength,” said Mr. Dongming in Sanya.

From all of us at DHL, congratulations to Team Puma on their awesome team efforts!
