DHL helps Valtra to reduce its carbon footprint - 300 trees were planted for the benefit of the environment

Tractor manufacturer Valtra has offset some 270 tons of carbon dioxide emissions arisen from its spare part transports during August-December 2009. This was possible through cooperation with DHL, the world’s leading express and logistics company. Valtra is the first large industrial company in Finland to use DHL’s carbon-neutral GOGREEN service for all its express shipments.
DHL and Valtra arranged an environmental day and planted trees on state-owned land in Padasjoki, Finland, together with other DHL customers. The event served to illustrate the volume of the emission offset. The calculation was based on the fact that one tree absorbs 20 kg of CO2 per year, and when it is left to stand for 50 years the total amount it will absorb will be 1000 kg.
The idea of DHL’s GOGREEN service is to calculate the carbon emissions caused by sending and delivering parcels and then to neutralize them by various climate protection measures. The compensation system is in line with Kyoto Protocol guidelines. All compensation projects are verified by an independent third party, SGS Group in Switzerland.
- Valtra’s customers have a direct contact with nature and are very environmentally conscious. The use of a carbon-neutral transport service is for us a good way to contribute to the work for our environment, says Matti Salminen, Logistics Manager of Valtra. DHL is one of Valtra’s most important logistics partners. In addition to express transportation, Valtra uses DHL services e.g. in container transports, tractor deliveries and warehousing.
- The transport sector is responsible for 14 per cent of global carbon emissions. As the leading logistics company we know our responsibility and have committed ourselves to improving efficiency in regard to the carbon emissions by 30 percent by 2020 globally. With our GOGREEN service we are also offering our customers an easy way to reduce their carbon footprint, says Kenneth Palmgren, Managing Director, DHL Express Finland.
Deutsche Post DHL has been the first global logistics company to set itself a quantified C02 efficiency target. To support this, the company is offering green products and services, developing sustainable solutions and has adopted a certified carbon management system. The most important measures of the Deutsche Post DHL GoGreen climate protection program include fleet renewal, energy efficiency, innovative technologies, employee engagement and the involvement of subcontractors and customers.
