Rich pickings

Layer picking is a time-consuming and labor-intensive business: in their run-up to shipment, product cases are picked out and transferred from individual pallets to a single, ready-to-ship multiproduct layer.

When one of DHL Supply Chain’s main customers wanted to automate this process across six warehouse sites in the US and Canada, the local team knew just what to do.

Using one site as a pilot location, DHL completely redesigned the client’s warehouse layout as well as the local team’s training plan.

The results were impressive: within a year, all of the customer’s warehouses had the new, automated system in place and reported a 350 percent improvement in output.
